The Country Wife

William Wycherley

The Country Wife — In this Restoration comedy, Horner spreads a false rumor of impotence to gain access to married London women, while the jealous Pinchwife tries to shield his young country wife Margery from society. Their schemes cross Harcourt’s courtship of Alithea in a fast satire of marriage, desire, reputation, hypocrisy, and sexual double standards.
