Der Kreisphysikus

Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

This five-chapter novella follows Nathanael Rosenzweig, a Jewish district physician in Galicia. A youth of hardship has made him frugal and calculating, but his bond with his faithful servant Joseph and an encounter with an idealistic emissary amid political unrest test his ideas about duty, wealth, compassion, and responsibility.
