The story of Iron Man follows the transformation of a wealthy, charismatic weapons manufacturer into a self-made hero. After being captured by terrorists in Afghanistan, Tony Stark is forced to build a weapon for them but instead creates a powerful suit of armor to escape. With the help of a fellow prisoner, Yinsen, he builds a life-saving arc reactor to power the suit and makes his way to freedom. Upon returning home, Stark shuts down his weapons company, realizing the harm his creations caused, and dedicates himself to creating a suit to protect others. However, his former business partner, Obadiah Stane, betrays him and builds his own weaponized suit, leading to a final showdown. Stark defeats Stane and solidifies his role as a hero, embracing the responsibility of using his intelligence and resources for the greater good. This marks the beginning of his journey as Iron Man.
