Young Paul and little Virginie are madly in love with each other, they get married. The narrator, a scholar of whom Paul is a student, goes abroad. He returns 3 years later and learns that Virginie is dead and Paul is cloistered in his castle. He rushes to find the latter: he does not seem upset, to his great amazement. In fact, Paul locks himself away for hours, and with the help of the incredible memory with which nature has endowed him, brings Virginie back to life...
