Young Paul and little Virginie are madly in love with each other and get married. The narrator, a scholar whose student Paul is, goes abroad. He returns 3 years later and learns that Virginie is dead and Paul is cloistered in his castle. He rushes to see him and, to his great amazement, finds that Paul does not seem upset. In fact, Paul locks himself away for hours and, with the help of the incredible memory with which nature has endowed him, brings Virginie back to life...
