Cosette is the second part of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, not a standalone novel. From reflections on Waterloo through Montfermeil to Paris, it follows Jean Valjean and his promise, as well as Cosette’s childhood under the Thénardiers. Hugo joins history and private fate to examine poverty, childhood, mercy and social injustice.
