In 1920, in Paris, François de Séryeuse, a young student from the old feudal nobility, and Count Anne d'Orgel, from the court nobility, become friends with the initial aim of playing Paul Robin, a mutual friend and diplomat, on the evening of a show at Medrano's. It is on this occasion that the student meets the Count's wife, Mahaut d'Orgel, with whom he immediately falls in love. Not admitting this deep feeling to himself and wanting to make a good impression on Anne, whom he greatly appreciates as a friend, he is from then on present at all the Orgel activities, quickly becoming a close friend of the house, supplanting old friendships.
