In 1920, in Paris, François de Séryeuse, a young student from the old feudal nobility, and Count Anne d'Orgel, from the court nobility, become friends with the initial aim of playing a trick on Paul Robin, a mutual friend and diplomat, on the evening of a show at the Cirque Medrano. It is on this occasion that the student meets the Count's wife, Mahaut d'Orgel, with whom he immediately falls in love. Unwilling to admit this deep feeling even to himself, and wanting to make a good impression on Anne, whom he greatly values as a friend, he takes part in all the Orgels' activities from then on and quickly becomes a close friend of the household, supplanting older friendships.
