Le Coffre et le Revenant

Stendhal

Near Granada, the feared police chief Don Blas has young Fernando arrested and forces his fiancée Inès to marry him. Two years later Fernando returns in secret and reaches her room hidden inside a chest. An improvised escape, a porter convinced he has heard a ghost, and Don Blas’s jealousy draw the lovers toward tragedy. Stendhal blends love, tyranny, and dark irony in this “Spanish adventure.”
