Mil palabras cubren la mayor parte de lo que lees

El inglés tiene cientos de miles de palabras, y para empezar necesitas muy pocas. Las mil de esta página son las primeras que se encuentra quien lo aprende, empezando por be, have y that. Salen de las colecciones «Palabras más útiles» de Lingard para los niveles A1 y A2, en el orden en que la app las enseña, y cada una lleva su pronunciación, su traducción y una frase que la muestra en uso.

Las cien primeras son las más escurridizas. Palabras como get, take y up no tienen un único significado: piensa en get up, get home y get a letter. Por eso aquí cada palabra viene con una frase, y por eso en inglés una lista sola nunca basta.

Cómo aprender las palabras de esta lista

No te aprendas la lista de arriba abajo. Lee cien palabras, oculta las traducciones y comprueba cuáles sabes ya. De los primeros cientos, casi todo el mundo sabe más de las que cree.

Las palabras que no sabes solo se te quedan si vuelves a encontrártelas, en frases que digan algo. Los cuentos para principiantes de Lingard están escritos con palabras como estas: toca una palabra en un cuento y verás qué significa en esa frase; guárdala y volverá en repasos breves hasta que te la sepas.

En inglés la ortografía no te dice cómo suena una palabra, así que fíjate en la transcripción que hay junto a cada una. La k de know es muda, y one empieza con el sonido de una w que no se escribe.

¿La lista está ordenada por frecuencia?
