Along the way, they encounter Eleven, a strange girl with supernatural powers, and uncover the terrifying truth about a parallel world called the Shadow World. While Joyce communicates with her son through flickering lights, Hopper discovers the secret laboratory that opened the gateway, and the children come face-to-face with a monster that hunts between worlds. In the end, Will is rescued and the monster is destroyed, but Eleven disappears—and it becomes clear that the darkness of the Shadow World never truly disappeared.
