In the idyllic Shire, hobbits lead a peaceful, contented life. Among them, Bilbo Baggins plans an extraordinary one hundred and eleventh birthday party, during which he mysteriously disappears and leaves a magic ring for his younger cousin Frodo. Years later, Gandalf reveals the dark history of the ring and urges Frodo to leave the Shire to protect it from the Dark Lord Sauron. Accompanied by loyal friends, Frodo sets off on a dangerous journey. Along the way, they meet various allies and dangers, including the mysterious Strider and the old, wise Tom Bombadil. The Fellowship, now with representatives of all free peoples, regroups in Rivendell with the mission of destroying the ring in Mount Doom. Their journey is peppered with treacherous paths, the loss of Gandalf in Moria and the inner struggle of Boromir, who succumbs to the temptation of the ring. Ultimately, Frodo decides to go on alone, but the loyal Sam insists on accompanying him while the rest of the Fellowship pursue Merry and Pippin, who have been captured by enemies. They vow to protect Middle Earth from the looming darkness of Sauron.
