The French words to learn first

French looks familiar on paper and sounds like another language. The words you need first are the small ones, être, avoir, je and mais, and the thousand on this page begin with them. They come from the Most Useful collections of Lingard for levels A1 and A2, in the order the app teaches them, and each has its pronunciation, its translation and one sentence that shows it at work.

Every noun comes with un or une: un stylo, une jupe, un vélo. Learn the gender as part of the word, because adjectives and pronouns will have to agree with it.

How to learn the French words on this list

Read a hundred words, hide the translations and see which ones you already know. Then say them aloud: in French, a word you can read is not yet a word you can hear.

The words you do not know stay with you only if you meet them again, in sentences that mean something. The French stories for beginners on Lingard are written with words like these: tap a word and you see what it means in that sentence, save it and it comes back in short reviews until you know it.

The transcription matters more in French than anywhere else, because final letters are usually silent: the p of beaucoup, the t of petit, the s of trois. Read each new word together with its transcription.

Questions about the list

How many words do I need to speak French?
The most frequent thousand words of a language make up about three quarters of an ordinary text. This list is close to that core, so it is the right place to start. To follow a film or read a novel you need several thousand more.
Is this list of French words ordered by frequency?
By usefulness to a learner. It follows the Most Useful collections for A1 and then A2: the most frequent words come first, and everyday nouns like un vélo and un sandwich follow. It is not a raw count over a corpus of French.
What comes after the first thousand French words?
The rest of A2, then B1, B2 and C1: about 4,300 words in all, in the same collections inside the app. Then read: a French story at A2 shows you how these words sound together and how the short ones join up, as in l'ami or j'ai.
