The German words to learn first

German has a reputation for long words, yet the ones you need first are short: sein, haben, ich, nicht. The thousand on this page are the words a learner meets first. They come from the Most Useful collections of Lingard for levels A1 and A2, in the order the app teaches them, and each has its pronunciation, its translation and one sentence that shows it at work.

Every noun on the list comes with its article: der Freund, die Prüfung, das Mädchen. Learn the article as part of the word, because the noun alone rarely shows its gender, and everything around it in a sentence depends on that gender.

How to learn the German words on this list

Read a hundred words, hide the translations and see which ones you already know. Many German words are close to English ones, so they are half familiar to anyone who knows a little English: das Wasser, der Winter, das Haus.

The words you do not know stay with you only if you meet them again, in sentences that mean something. The German stories for beginners on Lingard are written with words like these: tap a word and you see what it means in that sentence, save it and it comes back in short reviews until you know it.

A list gives you the base form. A text gives you ging for gehen and Freunde for Freund, and it joins short words into long ones. Learn the base form here and let reading show you the rest: a tap on a form in a story takes you back to the word you learned.

Questions about the list

How many words do I need to speak German?
The most frequent thousand words of a language make up about three quarters of an ordinary text. This list is close to that core, so it is the right place to start. For the news and for novels you need several thousand more, and German builds many of them from words you already have.
Is this list of German words ordered by frequency?
By usefulness to a learner. It follows the Most Useful collections for A1 and then A2: the most frequent words come first, and everyday nouns like das Fahrrad and das Sandwich follow. It is not a raw count over a corpus of German.
What comes after the first thousand German words?
The rest of A2, then B1, B2 and C1: about 4,300 words in all, in the same collections inside the app. Then read: a German story at A2 puts these words into real sentences, with the verb where German wants it.
