Cases make sense when someone is doing something
Akkusativ and Dativ are abstract until a character hands someone a cup. Reading is where German stops being a puzzle of endings and becomes a story you can follow. You will still notice the grammar — it is hard not to — but you notice it attached to meaning, which is the only form that sticks.
Start shorter than you think
A first novel in German is a common way to stall. The catalog has dialogues, short articles and stories in bands from A2 up, so you can pick a length you will finish. Compound words look frightening on a cover and ordinary once you have tapped them open a few times.
Look up without leaving the page
The old pattern — copy a word, open a dictionary, lose the paragraph — is why German reading feels like homework. In Lingard the meaning arrives on the line you were reading. Save the words that mattered. The rest of the page can stay a story.
