English speakers get a head start in Spanish: nación, familia, problema. Then the language stops being a list of cousins and becomes a sentence you have to finish. Reading is how that shift happens. A news piece, a short dialogue, a chapter of a novel — you see object pronouns and past tenses doing a job, not sitting in a table.

Easier than “just pick a novel”
