Spanish rewards reading early

Spanish is written almost exactly as it is pronounced. Once you know a handful of rules, you can read any new word aloud correctly, and you will recognise on the page the words you already know by ear. Reading and listening support each other from the first weeks.

Reading also shows you what grammar tables cannot. You see when a story uses the pretérito and when the imperfecto, why a character says estoy cansado but soy alto, and how the subjunctive turns up in ordinary sentences. After a few hundred examples, these choices start to feel natural instead of calculated.

Spanish reading, level by level

Beginner · A1–A2

Short dialogues about everyday life — introductions, a first job, weekend plans — and scenes inspired by Friends. Light articles like “¿Por qué es el desayuno tan importante?” and short grammar notes, for example on ser and estar.

Intermediate · B1

Summaries of Hábitos atómicos and La psicología del dinero, retellings of Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal and Solo en casa, and a weekly news digest in Spanish.

Upper-intermediate and above · B2+

Literature: Horacio Quiroga’s Cuentos de amor de locura y de muerte, stories by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez and translated classics like Viaje al centro de la Tierra. Poe’s El gato negro is only about 3,600 words — a good first classic to finish.
