The Spanish words to learn first

A thousand words will not make you fluent, but they are most of what you hear in a café and read in a simple story. The thousand on this page are the ones a learner meets first, beginning with ser, tener and hacer. They come from the Most Useful collections of Lingard for levels A1 and A2, in the order the app teaches them, and each has its pronunciation, its translation and one sentence that shows it at work.

Two of the first twenty-five words both mean to be: ser says what something is, estar says how or where it is. A translation cannot show the difference and a sentence can, which is why every word here has one. Nouns come with their article, as in el tiempo, la gente and el día: learn the two together, because el día ends in a and is still masculine.

How to learn the Spanish words on this list

Read a hundred words, hide the translations and see which ones you already know. Many Spanish words are international, and you know them before you learn them: la familia, el hospital, el animal.

The words you do not know stay with you only if you meet them again, in sentences that mean something. The Spanish stories for beginners on Lingard are written with words like these: tap a word and you see what it means in that sentence, save it and it comes back in short reviews until you know it.

A verb on this list is one word, but in a text it has dozens of forms: tener becomes tengo, tiene, tuvo. Learn the infinitive here and let reading show you the forms. When you tap tuvo in a story, you see tener.

Questions about the list

How many words do I need to speak Spanish?
The most frequent thousand words of a language make up about three quarters of an ordinary text. This list is close to that core, so it is the right place to start. To follow films and read novels you need several thousand more.
Is this list of Spanish words ordered by frequency?
By usefulness to a learner. It follows the Most Useful collections for A1 and then A2: the most frequent words come first, and everyday nouns like la bicicleta and el sándwich follow. It is not a raw count over a corpus of Spanish.
What comes after the first thousand Spanish words?
The rest of A2, then B1, B2 and C1: about 4,300 words in all, in the same collections inside the app. Then read: a Spanish story at A2 repeats these words on every line, with the verbs in all their forms.
