A thousand words carry most of what you read

English has hundreds of thousands of words, and you need very few of them to start. The thousand on this page are the ones a learner meets first, beginning with be, have and that. They come from the Most Useful collections of Lingard for levels A1 and A2, in the order the app teaches them, and each has its pronunciation, its meaning and one sentence that shows it at work.

The first hundred are the hardest to pin down. Words like get, take and up have no single meaning: think of get up, get home and get a letter. That is why every word here comes with a sentence, and why a list alone is never enough for English.

The list, a hundred words at a time

How to learn the words on this list

Do not learn the list from top to bottom. Read a hundred words, hide the meanings and see which ones you already know. With the first few hundred, most learners know more than they expect.

The words you do not know stay with you only if you meet them again, in sentences that mean something. The stories for beginners on Lingard are written with words like these: tap a word in a story and you see what it means in that sentence, save it and it comes back in short reviews until you know it.

English spelling does not tell you how a word sounds, so use the transcription next to each word. The k in know is silent, and one begins with the sound of w.

Questions about the list

How many words do I need to speak English?
The most frequent thousand words of a language make up about three quarters of an ordinary text. This list is close to that core, so it is the right place to start. To read books and news with ease you need several thousand more.
Is this list ordered by frequency?
By usefulness to a learner. It follows the Most Useful collections for A1 and then A2: the most frequent words come first, and everyday nouns like bicycle and sandwich follow. It is not a raw count over a corpus.
What comes after the first thousand?
The rest of A2, then B1, B2 and C1: about 4,300 words in all, in the same collections inside the app. Outside the app the next step is reading, because a story at A2 uses these words on every line.
