Frank Bryce overhears Voldemort and Wormtail plotting Harry's death at Riddle House and is killed. Harry wakes up at the Dursleys', his scar burning. He joins the Weasleys for the Quidditch World Cup, which is disrupted by the Death Eaters and the Dark Mark. At Hogwarts, Harry is unexpectedly chosen as the fourth champion of the Triwizard Tournament. He faces dangerous tasks and shows bravery and integrity, despite Ron's jealousy. The Yule Ball strains friendships, especially between Hermione and Ron. In the final task, Harry and Cedric are transported to a graveyard, where Voldemort returns, kills Cedric, and Harry escapes to warn everyone. The year ends on a subdued note at a memorial service for Cedric, and Harry prepares to fight Voldemort's growing power.
