Set in Birmingham in the aftermath of World War I, the story follows Thomas "Tommy" Shelby, the ambitious leader of the notorious Peaky Blinders gang, as he attempts to expand their influence amid the chaos of a city struggling with the aftermath of war. Tommy stages a risky betting scam and comes into possession of stolen weapons, attracting the attention of the British government and Inspector Chester Campbell, a determined lawman sent to dismantle the gang. As Tommy deals with challenges from rival gangs, particularly the Lee family, and pressure from Campbell, he develops a complicated relationship with Grace Burgess, an undercover agent assigned to infiltrate the gang. Themes of power, ambition, betrayal and post-war trauma interweave, revealing the characters' inner struggles as well as the brutal reality of their world. The season culminates in a violent showdown for control of Birmingham that ultimately cements the dominance of the Peaky Blinders, while personal relationships, particularly between Tommy and Grace, are thrown into disarray. The complex character dynamics and high-stakes conflicts set the stage for future clashes as Tommy works to build his criminal empire.
