In the idyllic Shire, the hobbits lead peaceful and contented lives. Among them, Bilbo Baggins plans an extraordinary eleventh-twenty-first birthday party, during which he mysteriously disappears, leaving behind a magic ring for his younger cousin, Frodo. Years later, Gandalf reveals the dark history of the ring, urging Frodo to leave the Shire to keep it away from the Dark Lord Sauron. Accompanied by loyal friends, Frodo embarks on a perilous journey. Along the way, they encounter various allies and dangers, including the enigmatic Strider and the wise old Tom Bombadil. The fellowship, now with representatives from all the free peoples, is formed in Rivendell with the mission of destroying the ring at Mount Doom. Their journey is filled with treacherous trails, the loss of Gandalf in Moria, and the internal struggle of Boromir who succumbs to the temptation of the ring. Eventually Frodo decides to continue on alone, but the loyal Sam insists on accompanying him, while the remaining members of the fellowship pursue the captured Merry and Pippin, vowing to protect Middle-earth from Sauron's impending darkness.
